Build your own Lightning. The Landing School has a Lightning kit boat available for an amateur builder who wants to finish out the boat to his own specifications. The hull, deck and rudder are ready to be assembled into one boat.
A renowned design by Sparkman & Stephens, the
Lightning is a 19′ trailerable sloop that provides owners
with world-class racing opportunities as well as family
daysailing. She has evolved into one of the most popular
and competitive one-design racing classes in the world
with more than 150 active fleets worldwide that are
governed by a professionally managed class association.
The Lightning has ISAF-approved international class
status.

The Lightning's aluminum rig is simple, but offers
sophisticated sail shape controls. The hull
features a unique hard chine that provides
the stability for sail-carrying power, and flat-bottom
sections that promote planing. Race a
Lightning with three crew, or there's room in
the cockpit for a family to daysail. The Lightning
is easy to launch, light enough to trailer
with ease, and is easily righted in the event of a capsize.
The Landing School’s Lightning hull is made of fiberglass over
foamcore. The rudder is constructed
of fiberglass over wood
core with composite reinforcements.
The centerboard is 132
pounds of stainless steel.
From the ILCA website:
“If you're looking for a boat you
can be proud to sail, one that
offers dinghy handling with the
performance of a sportboat, a
refined design that's free of
fads, complete with the technology
of today for both racing and
daysailing — Get The Best Of
Both Worlds. Get into a Lightning.
See you on the water.”
